The world is steering towards Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) from Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and Kenya is implementing its development blueprint ‘Vision 2030’ which embraces among other things research. It is important to do research, publish it as well as disseminate it for knowledge sharing which is the backbone of OpenCon. Data is equally key to decision making, planning and development of a nation.
In addition, most students and early career researchers cannot afford to buy articles in journals and books to aid in their research work due to these scholarly articles being unaffordable. Furthermore, the today’s world is digitized with only hindrance to accessing free online scholarly articles is connection to the internet
Why OpenCon?OpenCon is a conference series by Right to Research Coalition (RRC),SPARC and student organizations seeking to return scholarly publishing to its original purpose: to spread knowledge and allow that knowledge to be built upon. Open Access, and the open availability and searchability of scholarly research that it entails, will have a significant positive impact on everything from education to the practice of medicine to the ability of entrepreneurs to innovate. Price barriers should not prevent students (or anyone) from getting access to research they need. Stakeholders engaged towards open access, open education and open data are students, early career researchers, librarians, publishers, policy makers and community.
