The OpenCon Satellite panel and workshop is organized by the Georgian Medical Students’ Association (International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations National Member Organization in Georgia) and will take place in tandem with the Project Actors Capacity Building in Caucasus Conference held in Holiday Inn Tbilisi hotel on October 30, 2015 (in the frameworks of TEMPUS PACT project).
OpenCon 2015 is an anual student and early career academic professional conference on Open Access, Open Education, and Open Data. It is organized by the Right to Research Coalition and SPARC (The Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition). The meeting will convene students and early career academic professionals from around the world and serve as a powerful catalyst for projects led by the next generation to advance Open Access, Open Education, and Open Data. Parallel to the main conference satellite events take place all over the world bringing the movement of Open closer to the youth international community.
Project writing, whether development or research, is largely affected by the closure of information in forms of articles, data, educational resources etc. It is obvious that Open Access is crucial for the development of coherent, informative and eventually successful projects. Project developers depend on the data to make a situation analysis, to state a problem, to make a rationale, to be objective, to get an idea and for many other purposes which are the base of science, social and economic development etc. Most of the data/literature must be found online. Paywalls and closed data is a devastating obstacle for the ideal state of the project writing process. Therefore we find ourselves obliged to raise awareness of Open and promote Open publishing of articles, data and educational material, with the PACT final conference being a suitable platform, a place where mutual interests of many various stakeholders meet, to disseminate, promote and exchange the experience, build networks and summarize the activities in a mutual consensus document.
